Duties: RedCastle Resources is seeking a Communications Specialist who will be responsible for designing, developing, issuing, and moderating communications within the Forest Service’s Geospatial Management Organization (GMO). The GMO is responsible for the policy, oversight, direction, and delivery of the Forest Service geospatial program, including geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartography, photogrammetry, and global positioning systems (GPS). The successful candidate will work with the GMO leadership team and assure effective communication within the larger, nationwide, geospatial community in the Forest Service.
Skills: The Communications Specialist will be expected to use various resources, including print, web and social media, to interface with various target audiences within the Forest Service. The expectation is that the Communications Specialist will ensure messages from the GMO leadership team are consistently delivered and that the communication plan encourages discourse and feedback from the Forest Service geospatial community at large. Principal requirements and competencies for this position are:
- Excellent, demonstrated composition and writing skills, which will be applied to writing, reviewing, editing, and guiding publications for a variety of information sources including web pages, newsletters and technical papers;
- Ability to analyze information and develop technically and grammatically correct written materials;
- Knowledge of modern mass communication and public relations principles and techniques;
- Skills in the use of corporate communications tools, such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Sharepoint;
- Ability to add to and modify web content through an administrative interface;
- Ability to work closely with senior level leadership and to coordinate effectively across organizational lines;
- Interest in natural resources and resource management and geospatial technologies;
- BA/BS (MA/MS preferred) within a communications, business, or technical field;
- Two or more years experience performing communication related tasks in a professional setting (education in lieu of experience is acceptable).
While this position does not require a prior understanding of geospatial technologies, knowledge of the fundamentals will be an advantage in the selection process. All candidates should be quick studies of technical information and have an aptitude for distilling key messages from discussions, conference calls, and meetings. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team, able to collaborate with technical specialists, and adaptable to changing client priorities.
