Title: Intern
Organization: Marriott Library, University of Utah.
Job Summary: The Marriott Library's Digital Scholarship Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art audio and video studios. In Fall semester 2011, Project Manager and Digital Scholarship consultant Anthony Sams, working with MUSE intern Emma Zink and former MUSE intern Ambra Gagliardi led a pilot effort to capture student experience and document student academic development through longitudinal storytelling. Such storytelling will track students' experience over the course of a university career. With permission from participants, the end result will be a publicly available digital archive of students' experience at the University. We hope to continue these efforts with another MUSE intern. For the past three Fall semesters Sams and Alison Regan have co-taught the University Writing Program "Writing 3040: Digital Storytelling." Dr. Regan is Associate Librarian and Head of Education Services and Acting Head of the Digital Scholarship Lab as well as Associate Professor of Communication (adjunct). The two are uniquely qualified to support an intern's professional development and work in the "U and You" project. The Fall 2011 pilot phase focused on two groups of students: -Scholarship students working with the Women's Resource Center (an ethnically, racially and otherwise diverse group of non-traditional, single parent, and first-generation college students); and -students enrolled in the inaugural class of the Innovation Scholar Program. The Innovation Scholar Program, sponsored by Undergraduate Studies and the Technology Venture Development Program will ask students to explore big ideas, problems and questions; map out how they will make an impact, and put their ideas and education to work.
Hours:This internship is part-time for $10/hour. Depending on the intern's major, academic credit may be earned for this internship. Expected hours: 10 hours a week for 13 weeks. We are very flexible with student schedules.
Duties: The Intern will take on dual roles: first, he or she will recruit, schedule, and organize students for storytelling sessions. The intern will get basic training in videography and sound/video editing. The intern will be invited to document his or her own MUSE experience in the "You and U" project. (In future semesters, MUSE interns might well serve as a target group for participation.)
Skills: The DSL "U and You" internship will be open to all students. -Preference will be given to students with some knowledge of videography, documentary film making, and ethnography, but students with no experience in these areas will be considered. -Must be a currently enrolled student. -The ideal candidate will have strong communication and people skills, and have a passion for the University of Utah.
