Utah Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan public policy research organization. The mission of Utah Foundation is to promote a thriving economy, a well-prepared workforce, and a high quality of life for Utahns by performing thorough, well-supported research that helps policymakers, business and community leaders, and citizens better understand complex issues and providing practical, well-reasoned recommendations for policy change.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
Utah Foundation is currently accepting applications for a Research and Communications Intern for the fall of 2011. The intern will be expected to work 10-20 hours/week, for a 2-3 month period (mid-September to mid-December). There is flexibility to work both on-site (in Salt Lake City) and from home/school. Interns can expect to engage in independent research (with supervision) and have their research published through Utah Foundation. This internship is best-suited for those seeking experience involving substantive policy work and the opportunity to develop analytical skills in an applied setting. This internship is currently unpaid, but a modest stipend may become available.
INTERNSHIP DUTIES:
- Gathering quantitative and qualitative data on public policy issues
- Analyzing data using statistical and other tools and methods
- Writing research briefs and reports summarizing results of analysis
- Assisting in the preparation for and execution of public events
- Assisting Utah Foundation increase its online presence and networking abilities
INTERNSHIP QUALIFICATIONS:
Interns must be students currently enrolled in or recently graduated from one of the following programs:
- Master of Public Policy
- Master of Public Administration
- MA/MS of Economics
- Master of Education with public policy emphasis
- Highly qualified Junior or Senior undergraduate students majoring in political science, public policy, communications, economics or a related field
Additional Qualifications:
- Strong data analysis and writing skills
- Experience working with financial and demographic data
- Good proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Interest in public policy topics such as education, healthcare, economics, or tax policy
- Ability to perform governmental research with an objective, even-handed approach
- Ability to direct one’s own daily activities with a high degree of productivity
