Peer Mentor at local middle school
Organization:
In collaboration with ASUU, the Urban Institute for Teacher Education (UITE)
Hours:
Peer Mentors are expected to complete a 12 hour per month time commitment. Peer Mentors will receive a payment of $1,000 for the academic year.
Duties:
* Mentors must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA each semester.
* Mentors will receive a certificate of participation.
* Mentors' pictures and biographies will appear on the UITE website and College of Education broadcast network.
* Mentors must attend monthly meetings.
* In addition to a 12 hour per month commitment to work with local youth, and a one hour a month mentors' meeting, mentors must attend a 6 hour orientation in preparation for work in schools. In part, the orientation curriculum will include:
1. information on obtaining background check clearance as required by the state of Utah for those working in schools;
2. information on work with adolescent youth;
3. information on the goals and general cultures of middle and junior high schools;
4. information on the Family, Education, Rights, and Privacy Act;
5. information on work with first-generation college students;
6. requirements for logging hours and writing up student progress plans.
