Title: Journalism, Public Relations and Marketing Internship

Organization: The Center for Science and Math Education (CSME)


Hours: Hours will vary between 10-15 hours per week.


Description: This internship is an opportunity for mass communication majors to learn science communication through working directly with a scientist on campus. Through interactions in the lab or field site, the student will gain an understanding of the research content and process. The student will work with the scientist to portray this work through press releases, video journalism, and print media. Students will gain valuable experience in science communication and a portfolio of finished pieces. The student will receive guidance and skills training from the staff in the Center for Science and Math Education, including: framing the story; gathering scientific sources; copy editing, and marketing/dissemination through social media.

Duties: Duties as an intern for the Center for Science and Math Education will be, but not limited to, the following:

o Learning about the content and process of scientific work in lab/field site to better understand the research of the scientist

o Writing weekly press releases of the research in the lab/field site

o Filming and editing videos for outreach for the scientist

o Writing media articles on the research

o Copy editing stories for science communication blog

o Learning and carrying out social media for the CSME

o Other responsibilities as assigned by the CSME

This is an unpaid internship designed to provide an understanding of science writing, public relations and marketing in the field of science. The intern candidate must be a responsible, reliable, and professional individual who can work independently, and who can get along with a variety of people.
