Legislature Intern

Title: Legislature Intern

Organization: Deseret News

Hours:Some 40 hrs/week and others 16-24 hrs/week

Paid internship of $8/hr

Duties and Skills:
  • Covering state government and politics full-time during the Utah legislative session, Jan. 24 - March 10, and full- or part-time for a few of weeks before and/or after.

Internship Requirements:

A complete application consists of:
  1. The information sheet filled out (pick up this form in the Communication Department)
  2. Optional cover letter
  3. Resume
  4. Copies of clips or printouts of published work. These might not be returned. Class papers will not be accepted.
  • Sophomore or older
  • B grade-point average or higher
  • Journalism/communications major or minor
  • Practical experience working for a collegiate, community or professional publication
  • Complete an exercise that includes a copy-editing test, current-events quiz and writing exercise. It will either be given at the time of the interview or e-mailed to you ahead of time
  • Have a car to travel to assignments, and have a phone number where you can be contacted during the internship
  • If hired, you must provide documentation to the newspaper's human-resources officer that you are legally authorized to obtain employment in the United States

We will conduct interviews in our offices on Saturday morning, December 4. If it is not possible to arrange for that date, please contact the individual departments, as they will determine on a case-by-case basis any separate interview dates.
